Annemiek van Vleuten has won the Giro d’Italia Donne for the third time. It’s the sixth win in a row by a Dutch woman.

After 2018 and 2019, Annemiek van Vleuten has won the women’s Giro d’Italia for the third time. On the final 10th stage on Sunday (July 10th, 2022) from Abano Terme over 90.5km to Padua, the overall victory of the Dutchwoman from Team Movistar was no longer in danger. The Italian Chiara Consonni (Valcar – Travel & Service) secured the last day’s victory in the sprint.

Second overall was Italy’s Marta Cavalli (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope), 1:52 back, followed by Spain’s Mavi Garcia (UAE Team ADQ), who claimed third place on the podium, 5:56. The best German in the overall standings was Aileen Schweikart (Bizkaia), who finished 18th, 32:40 minutes behind.

Dutch dominance

The 39-year-old Annemiek van Vleuten started as the top favorite and underpinned the Dutch dominance at the Giro d’Italia Donne. After Anna van der Breggen won the race in 2017, 2020, and 2021, van Vleuten’s triumph was the sixth in a row in the Netherlands.

In addition, the Tour of Italy has only twice not been won by a Dutchwoman in the last 12 years: Mara Abbott won in 2013 and Megan Guarnier (both USA) in 2016.
