In the women’s Bundesliga, VfL Wolfsburg is only in second place, a long way behind FC Bayern. In the coming season, the club wants to launch a new attack on the title: with a DFB star.
VfL Wolfsburg has underlined its ambitions for the coming season in the women’s Bundesliga with a top transfer. The Lower Saxony team officially announced the signing of Giovanna Hoffmann on Tuesday. The German international will join the team in the summer and has signed a contract until June 30, 2029.
Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL, explained: “We are very pleased to have signed Gio, an internationally experienced top striker, on a free transfer who most recently impressively demonstrated her qualities at the 2025 European Championships in Switzerland.” The 57-year-old was particularly impressed by Hoffmann’s “mentality and her physical presence”.
The striker is currently still under contract with RB Leipzig. However, the working paper for the Saxons expires in a few months. Hoffmann is currently missing from her team due to injury. She tore her cruciate ligament last October.
Around a year before her serious injury, Hoffmann made her debut in the German national team. She has been used twelve times so far under national coach Christian Wück. You get three hits. Wück named her in the squad for the European Championships last year. Hoffmann was on the pitch in all five games of the DFB team.
In the women’s Bundesliga, the attacker has also played for Werder Bremen and SC Freiburg in addition to Leipzig. She is now taking the next step with seven-time German champions Wolfsburg. “You may not get a chance like this a second time – that’s why I want to give everything for the club, take responsibility and move forward with a lot of goal danger,” said Hoffmann. “The environment offers ideal conditions to get the best out of yourself.”
With the signing of Hoffmann, VfL Wolfsburg is sending a clear signal towards Munich. The last three championship titles in the women’s Bundesliga went to FC Bayern. It looks like the team around DFB captain Giulia Gwinn will also be triumphant this season. Bayern are already 14 points ahead of second-placed Wolfsburg in the table, even if VfL still has one more game in hand.
In the coming season, the Wolfsburg women want to finally win the championship again. VfL last won the title in the women’s Bundesliga in 2022.
