The prime minister of Italy, Giorgia Melonireceived with all honors the president of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapoin a state visit that took place in Rome between December 9 and 11, 2025. The official agenda, which included meetings in the Chigi Palaceseat of the Italian government, and meetings with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarellawas marked by the desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation in multiple strategic areas.

The main reason for the trip of the African leader, who assumed the presidency of Mozambique on January 15, 2025was to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with Italy, especially within the framework of the Mattei Plan for Africathe ambitious development strategy promoted by Rome with investments in energy, sustainable agriculture, vocational training and digitalization. According to the official statement, this plan makes Mozambique one of Italy’s priority partners on the continent.

Chapo’s reception was formal and ceremonial. Meloni welcomed him in Palazzo Chigi with a protocol demonstration that included public statements about the strategic alliance between both countries. In her first words to the press, the prime minister maintained that these types of meetings serve to “reinforce the historical friendship between Italy and Mozambique and consolidate cooperation projects that generate development for both peoples”, underlining the depth of the Italian commitment.

However, the diplomatic exchange was not without viral moments: images of the greeting between Meloni and Chapo circulated on social networks due to the marked difference in height between the two, a detail that could be seen in the facial expressions of the Italian premier, although it did not detract from the solemnity of the event. Beyond the protocol gestures, the visit of the African Head of State to Italy confirmed the joint drive towards a broad agenda of economic and social collaboration, amid efforts to intensify cooperation between both countries.

In his speech, Chapo thanked the welcome and emphasized the importance of cooperation with Italy for the growth of Mozambique. “This exchange not only strengthens our diplomatic relations, but also opens new opportunities for investment, employment and technological transfer for our youth,” he stated during one of the official meetings, according to the joint statement from the Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting, both leaders signed agreements in areas such as legal assistance, civil protection and digitalizationand ratified partnerships focused on expanding energy access in rural areas and modernizing the Mozambican agri-food chain, including the construction of the Mozambican agri-food center Manicafinanced by Italy with links to the Mattei Plan. “These types of initiatives,” Meloni said, “demonstrate that cooperation with Africa is a priority for our foreign policy and a concrete contribution to sustainable development.”
