The fall of the Swiss Gino Caviezel shocked many winter sports fans. Now it is clear: the 32-year-old will be out for months.
Swiss ski racer Gino Caviezel seriously injured his knee at the Super-G World Cup in Bormio, Italy. As the Swiss-Ski association announced on Sunday evening, the 32-year-old suffered “a complex knee injury that is still being investigated further.” In addition, Caviezel’s dislocated shoulder was reinstated.
Caviezel was at a directional gate on the infamous Stelvio on Sunday, he fell down the San Pietro jump and had to be rescued by helicopter.
Just last Friday, top French rider Cyprien Sarrazin had a serious fall during the final training for the World Cup downhill in Bormio. After an operation in the neurological intensive care unit, the all-clear was given on Saturday. The 30-year-old’s condition is “stable and he will remain under observation for an indefinite period of time.” At the same place, the Italian Pietro Zazzi suffered a broken tibia and fibula in a fall.
After the crashes, there was strong criticism of the race organizers. Sarrazin’s teammate Nils Allegre in particular made serious allegations. Fis race director Markus Waldner rejected the allegations as unfounded. The men’s Olympic competitions are scheduled to take place on the almost 3.5 kilometer long Stelvio in February 2026.
