Gijs Brouwer stranded in first round of Wimbledon; Van de Zandschulp continues on holy grass

After the disappointing elimination of Tallon Fransespoor yesterday, Gijs Brouwer from Venhuizen also failed to reach the second round of Wimbledon. Botic van de Zandschulp, on the other hand, upheld North Holland’s honor by winning his match. The tennis player from Amstelveen won in five sets against the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang: 6-2, 6-7, 6-7, 6-3 and 2-6.

The game between Van de Zandschulp and Zhang was supposed to be played on Tuesday. But due to the heavy rain in London, the game only took place today. Zhang (ATP-52) started the match very strong and soon won the first set. After this, Van de Zandschulp was shaken awake and began to advance. Both the second and third sets went to the number 44 in the world via a tiebreak.

Zhang came alongside again in the fourth set. Fatigue seemed to set in at Van de Zandschulp. On character, the Amstelvener fought to a large 3-0 lead in the decisive set. He did not relinquish this lead and thus managed to take the fifth and decisive set.

Gijs Brewer

For Gijs Brouwer from Venhuizen, the adventure in London is already over after one match. Without the presence of his fatherBrouwer lost in three sets to world top Alexander Zverev: 6-4, 7-6, 7-6.

Brouwer knew in advance that he would have a tough time against the number 21 in the world. Zverev was in the semifinals of Roland Garros last month. Brouwer sold his hide very expensively and often made things very difficult for Zverev. The 27-year-old Brouwer pulled two tiebreaks out of the fire, but the German always struck at the decisive moments.

After the elimination of Brouwer and Greek track, Van de Zandschulp is now the only remaining Dutchman in the main tournament of Wimbledon.
