Ghost game for Udinese after racism scandal

The racist insults against AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan have repercussions for Udinese Calcio. The Italian first division football team has to play a game without spectators.

The league association’s disciplinary committee imposed this penalty on Tuesday. A 46-year-old Italian had previously been banned from the stadium for five years. The police identified him as the perpetrator and initiated investigations against him.

During Milan’s 3-2 win in Udine on Saturday, there were racist insults against Maignan, whereupon the game was temporarily interrupted.

After almost half an hour, the French national goalkeeper spoke to the referee and then received encouragement and hugs from his teammates. He continued the game despite the scandal.
