The DHB team went into duel with Tunisia as a clear favorite-and directly demonstrated its superiority. The selection also revealed problems.
The German national handball team successfully completed the main round of the World Cup. The selection of national coach Alfred Gislason, which was already qualified for the quarter -finals, defeated outsiders Tunisia with 31:19 (18: 8) and climbs on Sunday with a good confidence on Sunday (Norway). The knockout phase begins there for Germany on Wednesday. Opponents are either the Portuguese or the Brazilians.
In front of more than 4,000 spectators in Herning, goalkeeper David Späth delivered a gala performance and demonstrated his class with a total of 21 parades. Back room player Marko Grgić was the best thrower for the DHB selection with eleven gates.
It is also questionable whether Juri Knorr will get well again until the quarter -finals. The playmaker is still on investigations in Flensburg, but should be on the way of improvement. “The spatial constellation plays us in the cards, and the World Cup quarter-finals that will only take place next Wednesday gives us a greater leeway,” said national team manager Benjamin Chatton.
In addition to Knorr, the Rune Dahmke and Lukas Stutzke, who was also sick with Tunisia, were also missing in the duel with Tunisia and the Franz Semper who had already traveled from the World Cup the previous day. So only 14 players were available to the national coach.
Still, as announced, Gislason protects some regulars. Captain Johannes Golla, Julian Köster or Renārs Uščins watched the 60 minutes in the training jacket on the bench. For this, Marian Michalczik, nominated, came to his first World Cup mission.
In the gate, Späth was allowed to go instead of Andreas Wolff. The 22-year-old was immediately at operating temperature and had a large part in the favorite’s fast five-goal lead (8: 3/10. Minute). This backing also ensured security with his forefenses. Young star Grgić in particular scored at the attack.
It was overturning that, given the clear superiority, a few careless mistakes fail too much into German game. Especially since Späth was a bank between the posts and defended twelve litters in the first half alone. So the game was already decided at the break.
After the change, the DHB team started a little more calmly, but then put on the pace again and pulled away to 14 goals in the middle of the second half at 26:12. In the final phase, Germany managed the clear lead and saved forces for the quarter -finals.
