Has Germany ever played against Ecuador?
Yes, there have been two duels between the two countries in football so far. At the home World Cup in 2006, Germany won the group stage 3-0, the goals scored by Miroslav Klose (2) and Lukas Podolski. A 4-2 win followed in a friendly in May 2013 – and Podolski scored again, this time twice. Lars Bender scored the other two German goals, Antonio Valencia and Walter Ayovi scored for Ecuador.

In the opening game against Ivory Coast, Ecuador would have deserved a point, maybe even more. The team had significantly better chances, especially in the first half, hitting the woodwork a total of three times. But there was a late shock in the final phase when substitute Amad Diallo was sent off Manchester United scored in Philadelphia to make it 1-0.
How strong is Ecuador?
Anyone who tends to underestimate Ecuador should look at the South American World Cup qualification table. The Andean country came in second behind Argentina, leaving behind the likes of Brazil and Uruguay. The team even compensated for a three-point deduction for cheating on a birth certificate in the previous qualification. Ecuador was incredibly difficult to beat and only suffered two defeats in qualifying – the only South American team to do so.
Who are the stars of Ecuador?
The highlight is the defense around the top players Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié. Pacho won the Champions League with Paris St. Germain, winning in the final against Hincapié’s team Arsenal FC. Both once played together at Independiente del Valle in their youth and have Bundesliga experience. Pacho was under contract with Eintracht Frankfurt and Hincapié with Bayer Leverkusen.
