German starters at the British Open halved

Golf pro Yannik Paul and amateur Tiger Christensen clearly missed the cut at the 151st British Open just outside Liverpool.

Major debutant Christensen dropped out with 151 strokes in shared 125th place. Paul played a good 70 on Friday to equalize Thursday’s round of 77, but it wasn’t enough. The 29-year-old finished the tournament tied for 85th place and missed the cut by two strokes. Brian Harman (USA) leads the leaderboard with 132 strokes.

Hurly Long (Heidelberg) left a much better impression, playing a 72 on his 28th birthday like the day before and making the cut on a shared 39th place (144 strokes). Ratinger Marcel Siem is also allowed to continue teeing off at the weekend. After a round of 71 on Thursday, the 43-year-old played par again on Friday and ended the day tied in 25th place (142 strokes).

Leader Harman undercut Thursday’s very good round of 67 by two strokes and now enjoys a comfortable lead. He’s five shots ahead of second-place local hero Tommy Fleetwood (137), who followed up Thursday’s 66 with a 71. The Austrian Sepp Straka follows in third place with 138 strokes.

Top favorite Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) struggled on the difficult course but is within reach of the top positions with 141 strokes in tied tenth place. Problems were also revealed by world number one Scottie Scheffler (USA), who made the cut after a lap of 75 on a shared 60th place.
