The online trade in Germany has remained on growth course in the third quarter of the current year. This emerges from current findings that the Federal Association of E-Commerce and Shipping Trade Deutschland EV (BEVH) published on Monday. E-commerce with clothing also achieved a plus.

According to the industry organization, online sales with goods reached almost 18 million euros in Germany from July to September. This corresponded to an increase of 2.8 percent compared to the previous year.

“Although growth has decreased by one percentage point compared to the second quarter. In view of a falling inclination, this is a robust result,” said BEVH general manager Martin Groß-Albenhausen in a statement.

The online turnover with clothing also increases

The online revenues also increased in the cluster of goods in the third quarter. They rose by 2.7 percent to just under 4.19 billion euros compared to the same period last year. Sales with clothing grew by 2.4 percent to 3.31 billion euros, with shoes by 4.2 percent to 874 million euros and with house and home textiles by 1.8 percent to 362 million euros.

The biggest winner was the cluster “daily need”, which includes drugstore and cosmetic items. Its sales increased by 8.1 percent to just under 2.2 billion euros. Increases also recorded the segments (+4.1 percent) and leisure (+2.5 percent). However, there were slight losses in the “entertainment” cluster (-0.3 percent).

The BEVH also emphasized the steadily growing importance of Asian providers. “Accepting over nine months they were able to increase their volume by about a quarter. In the third quarter they reached a new high with a share of 4.9 percent of the total e-commerce volume,” said the association. This development is “an indicator of the persistent tendency to save the consumers, which we also recognize in the clear increase of the orders of used goods on the Internet,” explained Groß-Albenhausen.
