With Betty Heidler, Germany had a world-class hammer thrower for a long time, but since then things have become quiet for the DLV. In the youth sector, however, talent knows how to inspire.

Nova Kienast broke the U18 world record twice. The German hammer thrower threw 78.16 meters in the US city of Tucson on Friday, setting a new record. A day later, the 17-year-old outdid herself and threw the three-kilo hammer 78.34 meters. The previous record was 76.04 meters (2013). Kienast pulverized this expanse with her attempts.

At the end of August she had already attracted attention at the U20 World Championships in Lima (Peru), throwing a four-kilo hammer a whopping 63.81 meters – a German U18 best performance. For comparison: Samantha Borutta won the German championship in the summer with 68.44 meters.

Kienast has not been training in Germany since September, but in Canada. Apparently the change of location and the associated training were successful. Her coach in Canada is Dylan Armstrong, who used to throw at a world-class level. His most prominent protégé: Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg.
