After turbulent weeks in the top management, the Austrian Ski Association has found two new head coaches for its biathlon teams after a considerable delay. Both teams will now be led by Germans.
After the sudden and unexpected resignation of Reinhard Gösweiner and numerous open questions regarding the filling of the coaching positions within the ÖSV biathlon department, the Austrians have finally created facts, according to “Krone”.
According to the report, the new head coach of the ÖSV women will be Markus Fischer. The former German biathlete has been working for the Austrian association for many years and was also head of the ÖSV women from 2020 to 2024. At that time, he handed over his post to Gösweiner, who pulled the ripcord after the chaos behind the scenes and resigned from his post a few days ago. Now Fischer gets his old job back.
The head coach of the Austrian men will also be a German: Felian Schubert. The former cross-country skier is also very familiar with the ÖSV and has worked in the youth sector in recent years. He was originally intended to have a role as an assistant coach, but is now given more responsibility.
New Pichler wind for Austria’s biathlon stars
Legend Wolfgang Pichler was responsible for the decision to fill the two positions with Germans. The Austrians hired the 71-year-old as a consultant a few weeks ago. He cleaned up behind the scenes and put some suggestions on the table to the association that not everyone liked.
Gösweiner was one of the opponents of Pichler’s ideas. An assistant coach should be assigned to him next season. But the 54-year-old obviously didn’t like that. According to “Krone” information, he was so dissatisfied with the path suggested by Pichler that he quickly took his hat off and turned his back on the ÖSV.
