German consul after murder of Belgian husband so sick that he was transferred from prison to hospital | News

Uwe Hahn (62), the German consul suspected of murdering his Belgian husband in Brazil, has been hospitalized. The diplomat, who believed himself to be untouchable, had been in prison since last weekend. According to Brazilian media, he felt so ill on Tuesday that he had to be hospitalized.

Belgian Walter Biot died Friday, according to consul Uwe Herbert Hahn, after falling ill and falling. Video footage shows the consul giving that version of the facts to the police. According to the German, his husband Walter Biot was on drink and drugs, which would explain his fall.

However, the police do not believe that explanation. A witness statement shows that the consul behaved arrogantly, considered himself untouchable because of his diplomat status and humiliated and beat his partner. The victim had about thirty recent and less recent injuries and an attempt had been made to remove bloodstains in the diplomatic couple’s luxury flat.

Impending divorce

Besides, there is a motive. According to a witness, the couple argued almost daily about an inheritance of 600,000 euros that Walter Biot (53) had received from a rich friend from Belgium. As a result, he was now less financially dependent on the consul, so that a divorce seemed to be getting closer and closer.

The consul was thus arrested for murder, despite his diplomatic immunity. Something the German might not have counted on. His lawyer tried to get him released because of his diplomat status, but that did not apply, according to a judge, because the facts happened on Brazilian soil and not in the embassy. The consul was also not in office at the time of the incident.

High bloodpressure

In prison, Consul Uwe Hahn must have suddenly become very anxious. Not only is his partner now dead, he himself is suspected of murder and had to exchange his luxurious penthouse in Ipanema, on Copacabana beach, for a prison cell.

According to various Brazilian media, Uwe Hahn became so ill on Tuesday that he had to be admitted to the Hamilton Agostinho Vieira Castro hospital in western Rio de Janeiro. His blood pressure would have risen to such an extent that he needed treatment and medication.

After the consul recovered, he was immediately taken back to prison.
