Ua broad and powerful current of dissent is preparing to shut down the country on November 28th. Next Friday, in fact, in stations, airports and subways, only the timetables of canceled trains, flights and public transport will be displayed on the information boards. Even public offices will be empty and this time, newspaper editorial offices will be added. Friday 28 NovemberIn short, it won’t be a day like any other: a series of national general strikes is ready to block large sections of Italian life. The Peninsula will be transformed into a chessboard where travel and work time will be temporarily suspended. But what are the reasons behind this massive mobilization? And how will our day change?

General strike, what are we protesting for?

This day of stoppage is not a simple category strike, but a choral criticism of the Government’s economic choices. The eight strike proclamations, registered by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), point the finger at the 2026 Budget Law. The promoting unions used a strong image, calling it a “war budget”. A metaphor that intends to highlight, in a provocative way, an alleged imbalance of resources with too little support for workers and essential services.

Means and mobility: the domino effect on travel

The transport sector is, as always, the hottest front, where the impact is felt in real time. But let’s look at the stops in detail. PFor trains it will be a 24 hour stop, extended from 9pm on Thursday 27 November to 9pm on Friday 28. This means that the inconveniences could start as early as the evening before. The protest involves both state railwaysi, from Trenitalia and RFI to the Italian Railway Network, and private operators like Italo e regional servicessuch as Trenord. For those who travel, the real risk is to see their train disappear from the noticeboard. A clarification must be made: by law, Trenitalia and the other companies are obliged to guarantee minimum essential services. It is crucial to consult their official websites to see the list of trains guaranteed that will not be cancelled.

Planes: guaranteed flight windows

In air transport, the rules are more rigid and defined by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC). Despite the support of the flight staff and handling staff, ground assistance, the mobilization includes “rescue windows”: the protected areasduring which flights are guaranteed only from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00. And essential flights, which means connections with the islands and intercontinental flights. Outside these ranges, however, chaos is expected, with particular criticality expected in the Milan Malpensa airport.

Local transport and highways

Also the Local Public Transport it will stop for the whole daybut with variable methods depending on the city and the company. Those who travel by car, however, will have to deal with it with the support of highway personnelwith unrest which, for some trade unions, will last until 10pm on Friday evening.

The press stops: the contract expires in 2016

One of the most symbolic aspects of the strike concerns journalists. Abstention from workproclaimed by the National Federation of the Italian Press, it goes far beyond a single day: it is a cry of alarm for professional dignity. The main cause is the failure to renew the National Journalistic Work Contract, which expired in 2016. Eight years without a contract update they representfor a sector in continuous transformation, a real evolutionary block. In fact, it depends on the contract and union protections of journalists free, autonomous and authoritative information for citizens. The requests are clear: economic and regulatory recognition for employees and, in particular, for the self-employed and freelancers. Clear rules and protections for the use of Artificial Intelligence in newsroomsto prevent technology from eating up jobs or diminishing their quality.

General strike: peaceful collective resistance

The true strength of a general strikewhich is not to have a long weekend, obviously, (the choice of Friday derives from precise historical reasons, born in the factories, and from logistical needs to maximize the impact), lies in its ability to compel attention. The unions involved, a galaxy that includes many, use the blockade not only as an economic lever, but as a storytelling tool. The crucial point is this: in an age obsessed with productivity, the strike is an act of collective resistance. By pausing trains, planes, offices and even the news, workers ask that the country stop and look at the human cost of political choices.

When silence forces you to think

This is why the workers’ strikes, including the mobilization of 28 November, they are not just logistical hitches, but they are a forced pause that asks us to reflect on the value of work. And the eloquent silence produced by the absence of means of transport in cities will be the backdrop to the demands. That said, the only winning strategy ahead of Friday is prevention and information. Anyone who needs to travel you will do well to consult the official channels of the transport companies in advance. The advice to avoid finding yourself unprepared is to plan with extreme care.
