Gazprom: Nord Stream 1 remains closed due to oil leak

Nord Stream 1, the pipeline that carries natural gas from Russia to Germany, cannot open for the time being due to an oil spill. The Russian state gas company Gazprom reports this on Telegram. It is unclear when the gas supply will reopen.

An oil leak was discovered during unplanned maintenance work, which started on Wednesday and would be ready again on Saturday. The gas company also shares a photo showing oil on a series of cables. Due to damage to a gas turbine, the pipeline could no longer operate safely.

In previous years, it was rare for Gazprom to cut off the pipeline through the Baltic Sea. The fact that there are now two meetings in a few months arouses suspicion among European politicians, who see it as a means of Russia to put pressure on Europe. Especially in Germany, which is relatively dependent on Nord Stream, there are fears that the pipeline will close for a long time.
