Andreas Obst was voted most valuable player in the Basketball Bundesliga for the first time in his career. But the FC Bayern player has another title in mind. Bamberg’s Anton Gavel is coach of the year.
For the first time in more than ten years, FC Bayern Basketball has the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Basketball Bundesliga: World and European champion Andreas Obst was voted the most valuable player in the BBL with almost half of all votes (48.1 percent). Obst about MVP result: “It means a lot to me”
With 16.5 points and 2.7 three-pointers per game, the shooting guard puts up strong numbers and plays a crucial role in FC Bayern going into the play-offs first. “This award is really special and means a lot to me. But at the moment the only thing that matters is that we can win another title this year,” Obst is quoted as saying in a club press release.
In the footsteps of Dirk Nowitzki
Obst is the first German player in 22 years to win this award. The last German professionals who were the most valuable player in the Bundesliga before Obst were playmaker Pascal Roller from the Skyliners Frankfurt and Nowitzki, who played for his hometown club DJK Würzburg in the 1998/99 season before moving to the NBA.
Three-point specialist Obst moved from Ratiopharm Ulm to Munich in 2021 and has since celebrated numerous successes with the German champions. Obst was even more successful in the national team, where he became world champion in Manila in 2023 and European champion in Riga in 2025. At the home European Championships in 2022, Obst and Co. won the bronze medal in Berlin. Nowitzki also achieved two medals during his time with the national team, but no title.
Bamberg’s Gavel is named coach of the year
Obst brings the second award of the BBL season to Bavaria. Anton Gavel was named Coach of the Year by a large majority. The Bamberg Baskets coach is ahead of Jacques Schneider (Gladiators Trier) and Sasa Filipovski (Würzburg Baskets) with 78.1 percent. Gavel has shaped the Bambergers, who started the BBL season with the smallest budget, into a strong team that is in third place in the table and was able to win the BBL Cup.
