The municipality of Bergen op Zoom is taking extra measures near the bakery on Kamperfoeliestraat. On Friday night, a fire broke out in the Turkish bakery following an explosion. It is the third time in two weeks that an explosion has caused unrest in the neighborhood. The police assume there was intent.
In concrete terms, the municipality does the following:
- A gathering ban applies immediately in the area (again). If three or more people are ‘being a nuisance’, boas or the police can intervene. The ban lasts for 2 weeks.
- Temporary cameras will be installed at the bakery in the short term. For the time being, these will remain in place for two weeks.
- The burned building is fenced off, so that it is no longer possible to enter.
- There will be more supervision from boas and the police.
On Saturday afternoon, deputy mayor Letty Demmers spoke with local residents. “Some residents are angry, other residents are concerned about their safety,” she said. “Alderman Joost Pals and I understand that very well. We cannot eliminate the feeling of insecurity overnight. What we can do is take a number of measures immediately.”
The owner of the Turkish bakery Asya in Bergen op Zoom estimates the costs to his business at more than €100,000 after the third attack in a short time. No suspects have yet been arrested for the three explosions in less than two weeks. Previously, a ban on gatherings was in force around the bakery. That applied until January 2.
