Gasoline reaches an all-time high

The fuel price has played this week new historical highs after chaining his fifth consecutive rise and become more expensive so far in 2022 up to 5.6%, according to data from the European Union Oil Bulletin. Specifically, the average price of gasoline has stood this week at 1,538 euroswhich represents an increase of 1.18% compared to a week ago, and its historical recordthus exceeding the 1,522 euros that it touched in September 2012.

For its part, the average price per liter of diesel oil This week it has stood at 1.422 euros, becoming 1.35% more expensive compared to last week. In this case, it does not reach a new record for this fuel, although it remains close to the 1,444 euros that it set in September 2012 as the historical maximum.

In this way, the price of fuel, after the truce given at the end of 2021, when it chained up to five weeks of falls, continues with the climb that began with the start of 2022. Since the beginning of the year, the average price per liter gasoline accumulates a rise of almost 4%, while diesel has risen 5.6%.

This new rise in fuel prices is produced to the slipstream of the escalation in the price of crude oil in the face of geopolitical uncertainty fueled by tensions in Ukraine and a low level of global supply, which led last week to the barrel of Brent quality oil, a reference for Europe, to exceed the threshold of 90 dollars for the first time since October from 2014.

With this new rise in fuel prices, filling the tank this week is 25.3% more expensive than a year ago in the case of gasoline and 28.3% higher in the case of diesel.

Thus, filling an average 55-litre petrol tank now costs around 84.6 euros, some 17.1 euros more than a year ago, while in the case of refueling with diesel it amounts to almost 78.2 euros, some 17.3 euros more than in the last week of January 2021.

Despite these levels, the price of unleaded gasoline of 95 is in Spain below the average of the European Union, located at 1,680 euros per liter, and of the euro zone, with an average price of 1,745 euros. Something similar happens in the case of diesel, since the price in the EU is 1,567 and 1,606 in the euro zone.

The lower level of final prices with respect to surrounding countries is due to the fact that Spain, despite the VAT increases, higher taxes and levies on biodiesel, continues to have a lower fiscal pressure, in general, than the average community.
