Gas still escaping powerfully from Nord Stream leaks, “historical major environmental disaster looms”

The gas is still escaping just as powerfully from the three leaks in the Nord Stream gas pipelines. That’s what the Swedish Coast Guard says. “Unfortunately, the gas cannot be captured or combated,” said a spokesperson. He could not provide any information about the amount of leaking gas. Environmental organizations are already looking very gloomy. They warn that the spills threaten to cause a historically large environmental disaster. Environmental Defense Fund states, based on a rough estimate, that 115,000 tons of methane escaped. That would be equivalent to 9.6 million tons of CO2, about the same as 2 million petrol cars emit in a year.
