Gamescom Hits New Heights: A Record-Breaking Turnout
The gaming industry’s interests are higher than ever for the Gamescom event taking place in Cologne this year. For the first time in its history, all exhibition spaces have sold out, meaning that no more stands can be booked. Tim Endres, director of Gamescom at Koelnmesse, remarked that the increasing participation from companies reflects a desire to connect with their communities directly at this premier event.
Exhibition Space and Major Players
This year, the overall exhibition area remains a whopping 233,000 square meters, which includes aisles and non-rented spaces. However, the dedicated space for exhibition stands is larger than in previous years, although an exact figure hasn’t been disclosed. The Gamescom is recognized globally as the largest trade fair for computer and video games, featuring major companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft Xbox, Tencent Games, and Ubisoft showcasing their upcoming titles like “Super Mario,” “Age of Empires,” “Dune: Awakening,” and “Anno 1800.”

Visitor Numbers and Expectations
Last year, the Gamescom hosted 1,568 exhibitors, but the numbers for this year are yet to be revealed. However, it was reported that approximately 357,000 visitors attended in 2025, which was an increase of 22,000 from 2024. The record for attendance stands at 373,000 from 2019. Felix Falk, managing director of the German Games Industry Association, indicated that they do not intend to exceed the highest visitor count, as it might compromise visitor enjoyment. The event, jointly organized by the association and Koelnmesse, is set to take place from August 26 to August 30.
A Theme of Optimism
This year’s motto, “Games Create Desire for the Future,” aims to inspire not just through entertainment but also through innovation and entrepreneurship within the gaming industry. Falk emphasized that the theme revolves around how to achieve the next level. Following recent challenges in the sector, the sentiment is that the gaming industry should look optimistically and energetically toward the future. After experiencing a surge in demand during the pandemic, the market saw a contraction, leading to numerous smaller companies folding.
Growth Potential in the Digital Age
Despite the recent market consolidation, the digital age holds significant growth potential for the gaming industry. Technologies such as Virtual Reality remain underutilized. According to the Game Association, nearly one in two Germans engage with computer or video games, amounting to about 37.5 million people playing on various platforms, including smartphones, computers, tablets, and consoles. However, it’s worth noting that German gaming companies play a minor role in the global gaming scene, as blockbuster games predominantly emerge from Asia or America.
As anticipation builds for the Gamescom, both exhibitors and visitors alike are gearing up for an event that promises to showcase not just games but the future of the gaming industry itself. With a sold-out status and a robust lineup of exhibitors, this year is poised to be a landmark occasion, contributing to the continued evolution and passion of the gaming community.
