A man died in the stands during a game in the Spanish second division. After that, it was no longer possible to continue playing.
A tragic death overshadowed play in Spain’s second division on Sunday. The game between Sporting Gijón and relegated CD Leganés was interrupted early on and later abandoned entirely.
The referee team stopped the encounter in the fourth minute. The reason was an emergency in the stands. Half an hour later came the sad certainty: an 82-year-old fan had died. The game was then finally stopped.
As “Marca” reports, referee Daniel Palencia called the two captains Gaspar Campos (Gijón) and Juan Soriano (Leganés) to him during the break to inform them of the situation.
At first the teams stayed on the pitch. The players kept warm and passed balls to each other. A little later all players left the pitch and went to the changing rooms. It is now clear that the game will end on Monday evening at 8 p.m. This means the team from Leganés does not have to travel again.
