Gallardo leaves River Plate: “The hardest decision of my life”

Move to Europe?

Marcelo Gallardo’s era as CA River Plate coach will come to an end at the end of the year. The 46-year-old announced at a press conference on Thursday that he would not renew his expiring contract and would leave the club. He spoke of the “most difficult decision of my life”.

“Away from the sadness, I have a deep inner peace that feels very good. The path I have traveled over the years makes me very proud. That’s the word I want to emphasize. We’ve experienced a lot in all these years,” said Gallardo, who is now associated with a move to Europe.

The Argentine had already been traded as an option at FC Barcelona in 2021 before Xavi signed. A position as Uruguay’s national coach was also discussed. Gallardo took over River, for whom he played at youth and professional level, in June 2014 and won the Copa Libertadores trophy twice, among other things. In 417 games he collected an average of 1.88 points.
