Samsung is reportedly undergoing a significant redesign of its Fold series. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to come with completely different dimensions, alongside variations in specifications and price.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event in July, Samsung is set to unveil a revamped Galaxy Z series. The dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 are expected to be radically different, introducing a new model dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra. But how do these two devices compare? Leaks offer some insights into where the distinctions may lie.

Major Differences: Dimensions

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is anticipated to measure 158.4 x 72.8 x 8.9 millimeters when closed, resembling the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Although it is taller, it is nearly a centimeter narrower and thinner. When opened, it may measure around 158.4 x 143.2 x 4.5 millimeters, closely matching the dimensions of the Fold 7.

Display: Lifestyle vs. Productivity

The dimension differences are evident in their displays. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rumored to feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch foldable display inside. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will reportedly expand to a 6.5-inch outer display and an 8-inch inner one.

Due to its wider aspect ratio, the standard Fold may be better suited for movies and series—providing a more cinematic experience with reduced black bars in 16:9 videos. The Ultra, however, offers a larger screen area, making it advantageous for multitasking, allowing users to run two apps side by side.

Camera: Who Needs the Ultra?

The camera setups also exhibit considerable differences. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to come equipped with a dual-camera system featuring a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. This setup will allow for sharp photos and expansive landscape shots, while also supporting 8K video at 30 frames per second for crystal-clear, smooth recordings.

In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is projected to include an additional 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, allowing users to get closer to subjects without sacrificing quality.

For front-facing cameras, rumors suggest no differences—both devices might have dual 10-megapixel cameras capable of recording up to 4K at 60 frames per second, making them suitable for video calls and quick selfies.

Battery: Lifespan Should Be Similar

A size difference may also be noted in the battery capacities. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rumored to feature a 4,800mAh battery, while the Ultra is expected to house a 5,000mAh battery. Given that the Ultra has a larger display and may consume more power, this should not lead to a substantial difference in battery life. Both models are said to support 45W wired charging, alongside 15W wireless charging according to the Qi2-Ready standard.

Performance: Similar Chip

Performance-wise, there are no anticipated differences. Both smartphones are expected to be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy—a fast chip tailored specifically for Samsung devices. Each will feature 12GB of RAM, sufficient for multitasking, and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. Additionally, both models are expected to introduce new Galaxy AI features.

Price: It Will Be Expensive

Choosing the Ultra will likely come at a significantly higher cost. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to be priced at around €1,999, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is anticipated to retail for €2,199—an increase of €200. In exchange, users will gain a stronger camera and the familiar design.

Conclusion

Should the leaks prove accurate, Samsung is gearing up to reinvent its Fold series. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is becoming more compact while foregoing the telephoto camera, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will continue the existing Fold format. This marks Samsung’s foray into offering two distinct foldable models. Early leaks regarding color options have also emerged, hinting at further customization choices.
