Galatasaray Istanbul around national soccer player Leroy Sané and ex-DFB captain Ilkay Gündogan have been crowned Turkish champions for the fourth time in a row. A wild 4:2 (0:1) against relegation candidate Antalyaspor on Saturday was enough for the Champions League round of 16 to secure the 26th championship title in the club’s history on the penultimate matchday. In addition to Sané, Gündogan and Cologne-born Ismail Jakobs were also in the starting line-up for Galatasaray.
The Nigerian top striker Victor Osimhen (66th, 88th) turned the game around and shot Galatasaray to the title after Soner Dikmen (45th + 3, 62nd) had given the guests the lead twice. Mario Lemina (56th) scored to make it 1-1. Former Bundesliga professional Kaan Ayhan (90+5) made the final score.
For Sané, who moved from FC Bayern to Turkey last summer, it is the first title in his first season for Galatasaray as well as for Gündogan. The 30-year-old winger contributed a total of seven league goals. On Saturday, however, like Gündogan, he was substituted at halftime and thus before his team’s comeback. After a 1:4 defeat at Samsunspor the previous week, Galatasaray took advantage of their second championship match point.
