‘Gakpo not to England but to Real Madrid’, says René van de Kerkhof

There is a good chance that PSV striker Cody Gakpo will leave for Real Madrid after this season. That is what club icon René van de Kerkhof says in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant. Gakpo has long been linked with a transfer to Manchester United, possibly even during the winter break. But according to René, that will not happen. “I have reliable Spanish sources reporting that Real wants to get Cody Gakpo as Benzema’s successor.”

Cody Gakpo was one of the stars of the Dutch national team this World Cup with three goals. That performance is said to have rekindled the interest of England’s Manchester United. “What I hear is that they have a serious interest in Gakpo there,” says twin brother Willy. “But PSV should certainly not sell him for less than 75 million this winter. But Ronaldo’s million-dollar salary is no longer at United, so such an amount is no problem for that club.”

“He can choose where to go from the comfort of his couch.”

But René thinks that Gakpo will not leave this winter yet. “And then this summer he can choose where he goes from the comfort of his chair.” According to René, the choice could therefore simply fall on Real Madrid. “I think he fits better there than in England.”

Willy has not yet received rumors about Real. “I visited Real a few months ago, but they didn’t tell me about Gakpo. I tried to exchange their Venicius for ours, but they didn’t fall for it.”

Both brothers see an important role for Cody Gakpo in Ronald Koeman’s new Orange anyway. After the somewhat disappointing World Cup led by Louis van Gaal, the Van de Kerkhofs would like to see the Netherlands play in the 4-3-3 system again.

Willy and René’s thoughts on this and the striking parallels they see between last Friday’s match against Argentina and the 1978 World Cup final can be heard in the new Willy and René Podcast.
