With a fatal yellow-red for Jens Castrop, 1. FC Nürnberg gave away victory in the Frankenderby. SpVgg Greuther Fürth dominated Nuremberg, who played outnumbered for 60 minutes.

With a win against 1. FC Nürnberg, SpVgg Greuther Fürth was able to secure three important points in the race for promotion (2:1). The key scene in the game was a foul by Jens Castrop, who was shown a yellow-red card and had to leave the field. Being outnumbered, the clubbers had no chance on matchday 23.

Both teams started the 272nd Frankenderby energetically. The high tempo resulted in the quick first goal: Nuremberg’s Sebastian Andersson took a cross from the right wing five meters in front of the goal and headed the ball in: 0-1 (8th). The Clover Leafs, roused by the goal, then stepped up a gear and created the first big header chance for Gideon Jung – but goalkeeper Carl Klaus confidently cleared the ball.

Despite the deficit, the Green-Whites seemed to dominate the game. And then it was Armindo Sieb who scored the equalizer. He sank a right-footed shot into the top right corner from 17 meters – FCN keeper Klaus had no chance this time (27′).

Yellow-red for Jens Castrop

With the score 1-1, the game became increasingly heated. First there were yellow cards for Jannes Horn from Nuremberg and Gideon Jung from Greuther. Then the traffic light card for Jens Castrop. He tackled at the start of the game, received a yellow card and was shown yellow-red for a tackle in the 34th minute. The club was now outnumbered on the pitch – and that was immediately noticeable. The 1. FCN seemed unsorted, but saved the 1-1 score at half-time.

The fact that the club had ten players on the field was also clearly visible in the second half: the Greuthers pushed forward and worked out standards. In the 56th minute Armindo Sieb was there again, receiving a ball from 16 meters and sinking it in to make it 2-1.

Nuremberg remained completely harmless, seemed overwhelmed when they were outnumbered, but Greuther couldn’t create any more chances either. The game sputtered along in the last 20 minutes. It remained 2-1, and FCN coach Cristian Fiél’s instructions couldn’t change that – even his many substitutions in the second half had no effect.
