Fugitive Belgian (36) arrested in Thailand: man was convicted of attempted murder after an argument with ex-girlfriend and worked as a DJ in a bar on Phuket | Abroad

Thai police have managed to arrest a 36-year-old Belgian fugitive. Thai media report this. The man was guilty of attempted murder ten years ago and worked as a DJ in a bar on the holiday island of Phuket.

The man – identified by the Thai authorities as a certain ‘Achmal’ – has Moroccan identity in addition to Belgian. According to Deputy Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau Phanthana Nuchanar, the suspect broke the fuse on January 19, 2014, during an argument with his ex-girlfriend. Achmal then went on a rampage in the middle of the street in Belgium and shot a firearm.

The court of appeal in Brussels sentenced him to 10 years in prison, but the man fled. The Thai authorities now discovered that the Belgian was working illegally in Thailand. The Thai Public Prosecution Service requested an arrest warrant from the court and received one.

The migration service in Phuket carried out the arrest and discovered that Achmal had used a Belgian passport several times to enter and leave Thailand. In recent years he had switched to a Moroccan passport and had alternately declared Bangkok, Sisaket and Phuket as his place of residence.

His last official residence was in Phuket. He stayed in a flat in Patong, on the west coast of the island. That place is the main tourist resort on Phuket and the center of nightlife. The beach is very popular with Western tourists and especially Europeans. The man worked as a DJ in a nightclub.

Achmal has now been charged with attempted murder and illegally possessing a firearm, firearm parts and ammunition. A procedure has been opened to extradite it to Belgium.
