When “Fifty Shades of Grey: Fifty Shades of Desire” premiered over ten years ago, the film adaptation of E.L. James’ bestselling novel became a worldwide phenomenon. Instead of conventional intimacy, the film centers around a power dynamic of dominance and submission, featuring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in leading roles who became celebrated Hollywood stars.
Despite its controversial public reception, the love story experienced tremendous success at the box office. However, behind the scenes, the production was reportedly much more tumultuous than many would expect.
For those who haven’t seen “Fifty Shades of Grey: Fifty Shades of Desire,” it is now airing on free TV.
About “Fifty Shades of Grey: Fifty Shades of Desire”
The plot revolves around the reserved literature student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), who fills in for her friend for a last-minute interview and meets the wealthy entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). An immediate attraction arises, but Christian Grey harbors a secret.
As Anastasia tries to unravel the enigma that is the millionaire, she confronts his unusual perspectives on love, intimacy, and trust. The closer she gets to him, the more her own worldview changes. Their relationship becomes strained as the young student eventually hits her limits.
The Challenges Faced by Director Sam Taylor-Johnson
With its unique premise, the film drew numerous viewers to theaters in 2015. According to Box Office Mojo, the film had a production budget of around $40 million and grossed an astonishing $569.7 million worldwide. This overwhelming commercial success unsurprisingly led to two sequels in subsequent years.
However, for director Sam Taylor-Johnson, the financial triumph came with mixed feelings. Years after the film’s release, she candidly shared with The Hollywood Reporter about the taxing experience of the shoot. During production, persistent creative differences with E.L. James arose.
As the author of the book series, James had a say in the film’s adaptation and her vision often clashed with Taylor-Johnson’s. These constant tensions transformed the shoot into a grueling endeavor, which the director needed to process afterward.
“I needed about four years to regain my self-confidence and composure,” recalled Sam Taylor-Johnson. Now, over a decade later, she reflects on the film’s production and asserts:
“At last, I am an artist who makes my own decisions, takes responsibility for myself, and presents the world with something I have created.”
Vox will showcase “Fifty Shades of Grey: Fifty Shades of Desire” on July 4, 2026, starting at 8:15 PM. For those who miss the TV broadcast, it will also be available online, with the erotic film starring Dakota Johnson streaming on Netflix or available for purchase and rental on Amazon.
