A few days ago my mom sent me an illustrated version of a common picture – created with a chat, in the style of the cartoon director Hayao Miyazaki and his studio Ghibli. The same studio Ghibli, whose films “My neighbor Totoro”, “The last fireflies”, “Princess Mononoke” and of course “Chihiro’s trip to the Magic Land” guaranteed me to howl within minutes. Now Mama and I in Ghibli-style, created by a machine.
With her enthusiasm for the new picture position of the AI, my mother was not alone: in the past two weeks the Internet was flooded with Ghibli-Fied versions of historical pictures, memes and moments from contemporary history. The death of JFK, the horror pictures from the torture prison Abu Ghraib in Iraq, Hitler-all dipped in the characteristic, nostalgic-in-heart style of Studio Ghibli. And because full cynicism is the bid of the hour, governments also participated. The X-account of the White House posted the Ghibli version of the arrest of a crying woman by an official from the ICE authority, which is responsible for border control. Even armed forces such as the Israeli IDF did not want to be outside in the general GHIBLI FORMATION. And numerous politicians: inside – also from the right spectrum. After all, the misleading AI images love it especially.
“Give more important things”, you could of course say. And of course, we are being overwhelmed every day with new madness (the Renaissance of the trade war with tariffs? The protests in Turkey? Shot paramedics in Gaza? AfD on par with the CDU?) And then it seems bizarre to get upset about the new functions of GPT-4O. But: Nothing helps, Ki digs into our lives in good and bad. And sometimes it is both at the same time, the good and the bad. Like here.
Because of course it has something for themselves when people can put their own ideas into pictures. People have always done the style of famous cartoon films, for a long time you somehow had to be able to draw yourself or know someone who can really draw well. Now it is in principle accessible to everyone. But: isn’t the incentive to learn to learn to draw yourself? And with it a skill, a dexterity, access to practice your own creativity?
Hayao Miyazaki has not yet commented on the subject, but an almost ten -year -old section from a documentary has been on the filmmaker and his studio viral. In the 2016 clip, some employees show him how to encourage AI figures instead of drawing each movement individually – as usual with Miyazaki’s films. He cleans his colleagues down and calls AI an “insult to life itself”. Is he still of this view today? Unclear. In the meantime, his son published his first film under the banner of Studio Ghibli, which, in contrast to the father’s work, is completely animated (and unfortunately is not that good at all). And apart from that, the films from the studio in general and Miyazaki’s own films in particular are often concerned with topics such as independence, finding identity, ecology, nature and their protection, anti -militarism and pacifism. With the trend of presenting particularly brutal moments of history and the present in the Ghibli look and celebrating militarism, this is not particularly compatible.
Apart from the fact that a whole series of questions about Copyright and Co. remain unanswered: have Studio Ghibli and the makers of the Simpsons and many more style -forming aesthetics allow the programmers of Openai to use their work? It doesn’t look like this – and Sam Altman, the boss of Openaai, says openly: If you are not allowed to simply use content as it is popular with you, is a layer in the shaft. And so all AI companies actually do it. Meta, for example, the mother company of Facebook and Instagram, simply fed and trained his AI directly with a database of predatory books. In England, many authors recently protested: peacefully in front of the UK headquarters of Meta. But the company doesn’t care, cheek wins – very cynically know Meta and his lawyers that they have the upper hand under the current political conditions. And the angry authors: are far too nice and polite inside to become more radical in their protest.
Maximum cynicism, that is the trend of the hour anyway: On Friday, April 3., The Artist Formerly Known as Kanye West published a new album, whose sound, be careful, himself described as “anti -Semitic”. How exactly is that? Well, it is called “WW3”, which is most likely to stand for “World War 3”, and has a lot of Nazi references if he does not exactly admit to stalking his ex-partner Bianca Censori or blaspheming Virgil Abloh about his dead employee and companion. My college: Inside here at the MusikExpress, the tracklist in their disgusting entirety has already taken a closer look.
Nobody is surprised. Recently he sold T-shirts with a swastika on it, proudly called himself an anti-Semite and so on and so on. At least since his separation from Kim Kardashian, but actually since the death of his mother, Kanye has dropped any barriers and further and further into a Weirde, right -wing radicals, hateful and above all deeply cynical world, in which the most important currency is maximum attention and maximum fracture of supposed taboos.
He is in a good, bad company, because these strategies are currently pursuing politicians worldwide: inside. And get through with it. Maximum break, maximum disgust, Kanye is very close to his role models Trump and Musk. And also with the AfD and Alice Weidel, who has now obtained the CDU with maximum cynicism in surveys. I get ready for Kanye’s appearance at the next party congress.
