From side job to successful entrepreneur: Kelly took over this lunchroom in Zoetermeer

Kelly van Heijningen has been working at a lunchroom and coffee shop since she was eighteen Bagels & Beans in the city center of Zoetermeer. She is now 29 and has taken over the business from her predecessor. Kelly gives her own twist to the lunchroom and hopes that even more Zoetermeer residents will now be able to find Bagels & Beans: “There is something delicious here for everyone.”

Bee Bagels & Beans you can have breakfast with a freshly baked bagel, piece of cake or other tasty snack. Or enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, fruit juices and smoothies. “Here you still get real human attention and there is always time for a chat,” explains Kelly. “We find that personal contact and a cozy, relaxed atmosphere very important.” At Bagels & Beans, quality and attention to the environment are important to them. They have their own coffee brand and there are many vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.

Everyone is welcome

Kelly started working at Bagels & Beans eleven years ago when she took a gap year. She never left. In their own words, this is mainly due to the atmosphere. “All colleagues are different and yet we work very well together. That also fits with what we want to radiate. Everyone is welcome here and can be themselves.” The menu is therefore very diverse and they have much more than bagels. “Whether you are looking for a quiet place to work, want to drink coffee with the kids or want to have an extensive lunch: you can do it here.”

Regulars

When she took over the business in March 2023, Kelly already felt completely at home and already knew the tricks of the trade. She also took a course in accountancy, which is now very useful. “I come from a family of entrepreneurs and I had the dream of taking over Bagels & Beans for some time. I think it’s really cool that I’ve been given that opportunity now.” Kelly still prefers to be in the business herself. “An office job? That’s not for me. I want to have fun and interact with people. Seeing loyal guests again and still knowing their regular order by heart: that’s what I do it for and I really like that.”

A twist of its own

Although Bagels & Beans is a franchise, Kelly still puts her own spin on the lunchroom. “For example, we do a lot more with social media. I also have a play corner for children in the shop, so that parents can quietly enjoy a cup of coffee or a cake.” You can now also order from Bagels & Beans via Thuisbezorgd, Ubereats and their own website. “That is also possible when it comes to large orders for a company lunch, for example.”

Sunny terrace

According to Kelly, the location in Stadshart Zoetermeer couldn’t be better. “The square in front of it has also been beautifully renovated. The terrace has been moved to the front and we have wonderful lounge sets. As a result, we have a lot of sun and you are protected from the wind. On nice days, families like to sit here, but it is wonderful for everyone to stay.”
