A Mini Apartment in Paris: Transforming a Former Ceramic Studio into a Charming Home

In Paris, it’s not unusual for homes to emerge from former workshops or studios. Often, these spaces are seamlessly transformed into modern lofts or apartments, overshadowing the challenges faced during renovation and redesign. This was also the case with a quirky 43-square-meter apartment in Paris that interior designer Ömer Öztürk took on. “This former ceramic workshop, characterized by its rugged and functional nature, was once a place where craftsmanship thrived,” explains Öztürk, an Istanbul-based interior architect. “Instead of washing away this character, the project aimed to evoke its handcrafted past within a contemporary living environment, maintaining a strong material palette and creative approach.”

A bold red velvet sofa adds a strong color accent to the living room, mirrored by a blue sideboard from USM. In the center, a lacquered coffee table showcases an oval sculptural art piece made of mouth-blown glass from Marquisate London. The ceiling lights are by Flos.

Flexible and Light-Filled Spaces

The goal of the renovation? To create functionality while developing a distinctive design concept that redefines living possibilities in a small space. Initially, the interior designer removed walls to create areas that align with modern living while maintaining fluid connections. The walls were cleverly replaced by a flexible curtain system, allowing the bedroom to be separated as needed without cutting it off from the open living area—enhancing both flexibility and natural light. “Natural light plays a crucial role: it enters directly and uniformly, amplifying the color variety and material impact while making the space feel deeper and more generous,” Öztürk notes.

A Sculptural Centerpiece

The visible bedroom from the living area is defined by a custom wooden bed designed by Ömer Öztürk Interiors, featuring a striking triangular shape. The entire spatial arrangement orients around this sculptural centerpiece, effectively highlighted by the deep burgundy wall behind it and complemented with green leather accents.

This thoughtful redesign not only honors the building’s original character but also integrates modern aesthetics seamlessly. Utilizing a bold color palette, Öztürk ensures that each corner resonates with a playful yet sophisticated vibe. The final result is a harmonious blend of past and present, where artistic expression meets comfortable living.

Conclusion

Transforming a former ceramic studio into a cozy apartment in Paris exemplifies how adaptive reuse can breathe new life into spaces. With careful planning and a sharp eye for design, Ömer Öztürk has managed to maintain the expressive charm of the workshop while creating a functional home that makes the most of its 43-square-meter footprint. Such transformations remind us that creativity is boundless, especially in a city steeped in art and culture.
