Frimpong thanks for European Championship with the Dutch Juniors; Brobbey, Dallinga, Hartman and Gravenberch to Georgia | Dutch football

The selection of the Dutch Juniors for this summer’s European Championship in Romania and Georgia has been announced. Brian Brobbey (striker of Ajax) and Bart Verbruggen (goalkeeper of Anderlecht) were not part of the preliminary selection of the Dutch Juniors, but come over from the big Orange where they were not in the final selection for the Final Four of the Nations League.

The other 21 players were already on the provisional list of Jong Oranje coach Erwin van de Looi. Jeremie Frimpong and Mitchel Bakker, the wingbacks of Bayer Leverkusen, are notable absentees in the European Championship selection. Bakker had initially opted out to focus on the preparation at his club. He later came back to this, but then the trainer made different choices in his position.

Some other dropouts are Jay Gorter (Aberdeen), Bjorn Meijer (Club Brugge), Dirk Proper (NEC) and Sydney van Hooijdonk (SC Heerenveen). The absence of the latter is also striking. The 23-year-old striker from Breda scored 19 times in 37 matches for Heerenveen this season, 16 of which were in the Eredivisie. In the last three matches he did not score again, but before that he set up a good series of ten hits in eight appearances.

The Dutch Juniors will start preparing for the European Championship on Sunday, June 11. The first European Championship match against Belgium is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21 at 6 p.m.

,,The European Championship is just around the corner and we, as the Dutch Juniors, are very much looking forward to it,” says coach Erwin van de Looi. ,,The most notable absentee in our selection is Jeremie Frimpong. After not being selected for the Dutch national team, he chose not to make himself available for the Dutch Juniors. This is of course a pity for us, but I also think that without Frimpong I would have a good selection for the European Championship.”

It is the second time in a row that the Dutch Juniors participate in the European Championship. At the previous edition in 2021, which was played over two periods due to the outbreak of the corona virus, the team reached the semi-finals, in which Germany was too strong. Tickets for the Olympic Games in Paris can be earned at the European Championships.
