Joy and Kjeld started a relationship in 2019 after they became teammates at the Jumbo-Visma skating team. There was a lot to do at the time because Kjeld’s relationship with the mother of his son Jax had just broken down. In addition, he and Joy had an age difference of ten years.

In an interview with Heroes magazine the two told about the first period as teammates. “As a nineteen-year-old I joined a team with all the tough guys,” says Joy. Kjeld adds that they were all roosters together and that he may have been the one with the biggest mouth. “But if it didn’t go well, I would be the first to knock on your door. I also dared to show my insecurities to you.”
Joy also noticed that she could show her emotions with Kjeld. “I told you things that I didn’t tell anyone else. But at the same time I was very much aware that you had a girlfriend and a child. We were good colleagues, friends. It really didn’t go any further than that.”

Eventually the two find each other and they start a relationship. “Sometimes the two of us are completely at a loss. Even when others are there and they don’t understand at all why we have to laugh so much. Delicious,” said the happy couple in the same interview.
