Friedrich and Lochner race to medals in two-man bobsleigh European Championships – bobsleigh – winter sports

Friedrich gets 66th World Cup victory

Friedrich and his brakeman Thorsten Margis had the best time in the first run (1:05.89 minutes), in the second run the second-best time (1:05.87 minutes) was enough to win. Next to the sixth EMtitle, the Saxon also drove to his 66th World Cup victory and stood on the World Cup podium for the 102nd time in his career.

Frederick: “Form curve still rising”

“We’re glad we got the runs down like that. The first one was very good, the second we had after that horseshoe two or three curves in which we had to catch ourselves again”said Frederick. The often self-critical record bob pilot added with a laugh: “But otherwise we’re great happy. We’re good at the start. But your shape curve is still rising. We are in good shape and well prepared for Beijing.”

Locher takes bronze – Kripps runs a track record

With Johannes Lochner and Florian Bauer in third place, a second German sled took the lead EM-Silver. After the first run, the two Bavarians were still in second place in the World Cup, a hundredth of a second ahead of Justin Kripps from Canada.

But Lochner gave up this place again: Kripps and Cam Stones set a new track record of 1:05:87 minutes. The Russian Rotislav Gaitjukewitsch (+ 0.45 seconds), who finished fourth in the World Cup, took bronze at the European Championships.

Oats knocked off aft

The third German sled with Christoph Hafer and Matthias Sommer was only eighth. The two were again too slow at the start – in the first run they had the 19th-best time, in the second run the 13th-best time. They couldn’t catch up on the track, 0.93 seconds behind Friedrich, they crossed the finish line.
