Frida Kahlo: The painting that cost 33 million dollars is already exhibited in Malba

It will be one of the great cultural attractions of the city from now on. Is named Diego and me and it’s already hanging in a special room Malbaside by side Kahlo from the collection: “Self-portrait with monkey and parrot”, a work from 1942.

Eduardo Constantini bought it last year Sotheby’s and broke his own record by acquiring the painting of Frida for 33 million dollars (with taxes included). His previous economic milestone was, precisely, a painting by the painter Diego Rivera (Kahlo’s partner) “Dance in Tehuantepec”for 15.7 million dollars.

“Diego y yo” is the last bust self-portrait painted by Frida before her death in 1954. The portrait is from 1942.

To accompany this work, a new staging of the Malba collection, with the best of its heritage, can be seen in the coming months. The exhibition bears the name “Third Eye” and displays works by Wifredo Lam, Vicente do Rego Monteiro, Victor Brecheret, Alice Rahon, Mario Carreño, Rubens Gerchman, Antonio Dias, Augusto de Campos, Alejandro Otero, Alipio Jaramillo, Carlos Mérida and Rafael Barred.

During the presentation Eduardo Costantini referred to the team that helps him daily to choose the works of his collection, from the Acquisitions Committee; even the curator of the Museum, María Amalia García, and even Elina, his wife; many of which are exhibited at Malba.
