Fresh pop with a good shot of country and more fun culture tips for the weekend

The Zaanse band Lorena and the Tide is making good progress. They have already released an album, are traveling through the province in a van for a day and next weekend they will be on stage Manifesto in Hoorn. Other tips for the weekend: A Van Kooten and the Bie Marathon on Saturday in the Badhuis in Haarlem and a bicycle theater tour on Texel.

Tip 1: Lorena and the Tide in Hoorn

The North Holland indie band Lorena and the Tide will come to Manifesto on June 3 as part of The Surf Tour. The five-piece band makes country pop with an alternative edge and is influenced by artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson and Taylor Swift.

In March 2022, the band self-released its debut album “Open Sea”. Attention was paid to it in, among others, the Noord-Hollands Dagblad and 3voor12 Noord-Holland, which OpenSea called ‘dynamic’ in their review, ‘but also with quiet characteristics, which immediately shows and hears the versatility of the band.’

New music means a new tour, so this summer the band will be on the road again, visiting various pop venues in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. “Surfer” and “Surfer II” are two parts of a summer coming-of-age story and will be released in May as a double single with a short film. The songs take you to sunny California in the days of cassette tapes and plaid shirts and could easily fit on the next Guardians of the Galaxy mixtape.

Tip 2: Koot and Bie Marathon in Haarlem

On March 27, 2023, Wim de Bie passed away, a brilliant mind who changed the landscape of Dutch comedy. A man who made us laugh and made us think about (still) socially relevant matters.

To honor Wim de Bie, the Badhuis will be transformed into an intimate cinema where all the hilarity and sharp satire will be shown again. Van Jacobse and van Es, the shy Meneer Foppe, herbalist Berendien uut Wisp, the former German teacher Otto den Beste and mayor Van der Vaart van Juinen and of course Frank, the frustrated son of Carla van der Putten and the withdrawn Walter de Rochebrune.

The Koot en Bie Marathon will be held in the Badhuis in Haarlem and will start at 3:00 PM. Entrance is free, but there is a donation box at the entrance.

Tip 3: Bicycle theater tour across Texel

It’s great cycling weather this weekend, so if you live or are on Texel, there’s nothing stopping you from participating in Theater op de Fiets. Between Den Hoorn and Den Burg, four special locations are the stage for theatre, poetry, mime and music. The Theater on the Bicycle loop is approximately ten kilometers long. There is no need to search because a guard cycles with you.

Mirre Valkenburg, originally from Texel, will give a concert in which songs from Galicia are central. It is a solo performance in which the singer accompanies herself on various instruments, including a guitar zither.

In addition to music by Mirre Valkenburg, the program of Theater op de Fiets offers theater by BlondeBIZON. The ladies play I start with you a comical and moving performance about a mother-daughter relationship. Theater Poppekus plays ‘The secret of Janna’s coffee’, a puppet show for adults. In his performance light finally, Bas ten Have brings to light an ode that we experience around us every day in various forms.

Theater Op de Fiets at various locations on Texel on Saturday 3 June from 13:30 to 17:00.

On Sunday 4 June, Blonde Bizon will play the performance in the Hoornder Vermaning You will just be yourself, in the company of Frits Lambrechts (86 years old). They play and sing a real family feast. Grandpa, mother, daughter and granddaughter are intensely connected and they sing each other out, interspersed with cutting dialogues.
