French police arrest man after knife attack at synagogue in Cannes | Abroad

Police officers arrested a man in the southern French city of Cannes on Wednesday who attacked someone with a knife near a synagogue.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reports on X, formerly Twitter, that officers ‘arrested a very dangerous man who wanted to attack another person with a knife. Thanks to them, the worst has been avoided,” Darmanin said.

According to the newspaper Le Figaro the man was praying in a car garage on Wednesday evening when the manager came and told him that ‘this is no place to pray’. The man then allegedly shouted ‘God is great’ in Arabic and tried to stab the manager several times. The perpetrator fled, but was quickly apprehended.

According to public prosecutor Damien Savarzeix, the events took place about 200 meters from a synagogue, “but it is still too early to say whether there is a connection.” The man is accused of incitement to terrorism and armed attack.
