Alexander Zverev in action during his match against Tomas Machac

As of: May 27, 2026 • 10:30 p.m

Alexander Zverev reached the third round at the French Open in Paris after a convincing performance. The Hamburg native easily defeated Tomas Machac in three sets 6:4, 6:2 and 6:2 in the night session on Wednesday evening. The next opponent is the Frenchman Quentin Halys.

Zverev got off to a perfect start against the Czech, getting the break straight away in the first set, which he then defended until the end of the set. The 29-year-old hardly allowed anything on his own serve throughout the entire match, only conceded a single break point, served 19 strong aces and was significantly more powerful from the baseline than his opponent.

Machac with a problem from the end of the second set

A total of 45 winners over the entire season underline the Hamburger’s dominant game. The German never left any doubt as to who would leave the pitch as the winner.

From the second sentence onwards it became even clearer. This time Zverev even took the first two serves from his opponent and from then on raced towards round three. Machac, who repeatedly showed off his skills, was no longer able to stop him. Also because the Czech struggled with problems on his left foot from the end of the second set.

Match point with an ace

In the third set there was another break so quickly. Zverev then played the game home confidently and also saved some energy with a view to the rest of the tournament. The final set only lasted 24 minutes. After just 1:48 hours, the Hamburg native ended this one-sided game on the Court Philippe Chatrier with an ace, as befits his standing. For the world number three, it was the 550th victory on the tour.

“Tomas also played great for one and a half sets, that was a fantastic level. Then unfortunately he was a little limited,” explained Zverev after the game. “I’m just happy with my game. And let’s see how it goes in the next ten days.”
