French Film Week 2022 begins on November 24th. This year’s closing film of the festival is “Fragil”, the debut film by French-Algerian director Emma Benestan. In the film, Benestan questions role clichés and the image of men in relationship comedies from a feminist perspective.

“Fragil” is about Az (Yasin Houicha), an oystercatcher from the city of Sète, who tries to win back his girlfriend Jess after a failed marriage proposal. While his friends are trying to build up new self-confidence in him, he encounters Algerian raï music – and the dancer Lila (César prizewinner Oulaya Amamra).

“I am French-Algerian. It was close to my heart to make a film with young heroes of Maghreb origin, to write them a love story, a romantic comedy,” says director Benestan. “The feminist idea is the starting point of the film. I wanted a contemporary rom-com. We need to break the codes that bind us and make us think that a man shouldn’t cry when he’s left, or that a woman should only be happy when her love life is fulfilled as a couple.”

The French Film Week will take place in twelve German cities in 2022 (Aachen, Bremen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Erlangen, Fürth, Frankfurt, Freiburg, Kiel, Munich, Rostock and Saarbrücken). The festival concludes with the performance of Fragile in Berlin on Wednesday November 30th. The film can be seen beforehand in Cologne on November 28th and in Bremen on November 29th. “Fragil” will be presented in all three cities by Bessanet and main actor Yasin Houicha. The official German cinema release of “Fragil” is on December 1st.
