Midfielder Janik Haberer is moving from Bundesliga club SC Freiburg to league rivals 1. FC Union Berlin in the summer. The two clubs announced this.

As his contract with the Baden team expires, the 28-year-old is leaving on a free transfer. The Berliners did not announce how long his new contract would be valid. Haberer’s departure from Freiburg had been indicated for a long time.

According to a report by “kicker”, VfL Bochum, 1. FC Köln, Mainz 05 and Schalke 04 were also interested in him.

“I was looking for a new challenge and found it in the move from Freiburg to Berlin,” said the professional, who has been playing in southern Baden since 2016 and whose future club will be represented internationally in the new round, just like SC.

He is “confident that we can play a good role in all three competitions next season.” Haberer brings “a lot of variability and can play different positions in midfield,” said Union managing director Oliver Ruhnert about his newcomer.
