It is still the largest memorial concert ever given to honor a deceased musician: the “Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for Aids Awareness”.

During the TV broadcast, an estimated one billion people in 76 countries gathered in front of the TV screen to say goodbye to the legendary Queen singer. After the gig with an almost unbelievable number of stars, the topic of AIDS received even more attention. Though sadly it had to be preceded by tragedy.

The documentary “Freddie Mercury – The Last Act” shows the first comprehensive interview with Mercury’s sister Kashmira Bulsara as well as numerous conversations with the musicians who performed, including Gary Cherone, Roger Daltrey or Joe Elliott.

Freddie Mercury’s story of suffering over the last few years is told uncensored for the first time in the film. The experiences of people who are HIV positive and people who have lost their loved ones to the effects of AIDS are described.

Doctors, human rights activists, including Peter Tatchell, and survivors describe the intense early years of the 1980s pandemic and the moral debates that inevitably accompanied it.

“Freddie Mercury – The Last Act”: July 29 at 9:45 p.m. on arte – until September 26 in the arte media library.
