After the narrow defeat at Lyon, Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller was shown the red card. He took the microphone to comment on the heated scene.
Eintracht Frankfurt suffered their first defeat of the season in the Europa League. The Hessians lost 2-3 in a hard-fought game against Olympique Lyon on Thursday evening. In addition to the defeat, the formation of a pack after the final whistle was what caused a lot of discussion. Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller came into focus and was given a red card by referee Andris Treimanis.
There were a lot of fouls and provocations, especially in the final phase of the game, which ultimately led to the formation of a pack after the final whistle.
On the RTL microphone, Toppmöller described the situation from his perspective. “I complained once and then got a yellow card,” he explained. He later tried to calm the situation after the final whistle by removing players like Omar Marmoush and Can Uzun from the scramble. He made it clear to the referee that the escalation was to be attributed to his team management.
“I just pointed at the referee and at the pack formation and said: ‘This is your fault’. I didn’t insult him, I’m not being excessive “It was emotional,” said Toppmöller. But the escalation was the referee’s mistake, “because he was completely out of control of the game at the end. I told him that. If that’s a red card, then I have to take it that way,” said the coach .
Due to the red card, Toppmöller will not be able to stand on the sidelines for Eintracht’s next Europa League game against Ferencváros Budapest. The coach left it open whether an appeal would be lodged against the decision. “We’ll now see what he actually writes in his report. If he writes the truth, then there’s actually no reason for red, but he definitely seemed very inconfident,” said Toppmöller.
