Expectation in the nursing homes before the imminent start -from September 26- of the campaign of the second booster dose of the new coronavirus vaccines already adapted to the Ómicron variant. The employers of the sector They celebrate the new puncture, which they have always defended, and they estimate that, in the week of October 10both residents and workers of health centers, They will be immunized. The autonomous communities will follow the strategy set at the national level: those who live in the social health centers will go first and those over 80the most vulnerable, and, later, that administration will be expanded up to 60. To this end, communities such as Galicia have already announced that they will use the so-called ‘vacundromes’.

After an intense debate on its scientific evidence and the convenience of the moment of administering it, for the sake of the epidemiological situation, last Thursday the Public Health Commission -of which the Ministry of Health and autonomous communities are part- set a date for the start of the vaccination campaign of the second booster dose against the coronavirus for vulnerable people, older than 60 years and health and social health personnel. just a few hours later, he arrived in Spain the first batch of doses adapted to the Ómicron variant that will be distributed this week to the communities.

During this month of September, 10 million doses of coronavirus vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant will arrive.

The Ministry of Health had already anticipated that the adapted vaccines would be available from from the second half of September. In total, throughout the month, 10 million doses will arrive. Demonstrated effectiveness

Because, from the bosses, they are clear about it. We must continue to protect residents from the coronavirus. Jesús Cubero refers to the latest analysis on the effectiveness of vaccines published by the department headed by Carolina Darias: only 1% of those who died from the disease had the complete regimen (in a sample of 1,600 people), while 2.2% had received two doses. The rate rose to almost 15% (14.8) among those They had only one puncture.

“The majority do not have any problem. They have seen that it does not have adverse effects and, in addition, it has gone well for them,” says Jesús Cubero about the administration to the elderly.

“The effectiveness is highly demonstrated”, insists the general secretary of AESTE who, he assures, has always been in favor of the inoculation of a second booster dose. He adds that the elderly of the residences have no problem receiving it. “Most of them, they have no problem. They have seen that has no adverse effects and, in addition, they have done well”, he points out. He also applauds that, in this first phase, the administration of the workers of the socio-sanitary centers is included. In the case of these workers, the employers are not concerned about who are wary of receiving the fourth dose.”Perhaps with the first dose, some could be more reluctant, but they know that if they are vaccinated, it will make it difficult for them to infect a larger or someone in your family“, points out the director of the employer’s association.

Minimum occupancy in hospitals

With data from last Friday from the Ministry of Health, the last available, the coronavirus indicators have not rebounded after the first week of September. The incidence in those over 59 years of age drops to 137 cases and the hospital occupation it is close to the minimum of the pandemic registered in October of last year (1.9%). Good news, admits Cubero, despite the fact that, in the dependency sector, they still prefer to show themselves prudent in the face of this incidence in the autumn.
