Fourteen months of youth detention after stabbing during Hoogkarspel fair

Two boys, aged 17 and 18, from Alkmaar and Venhuizen, are in juvenile detention because they beat and stabbed a 15-year-old boy during the fair in Hoogkarspel last September. This was decided by the court this afternoon.

The 15-year-old boy from Hoogkarspel was pulled from his bicycle on September 25 last year, beaten several times and stabbed in the head. According to the public prosecutor, it is ‘pure luck’ that the stabbing only just ended well. “The knife went right through his skull. A brain haemorrhage, concussion and bruising to the face. He could have died just like that,” she said during the trial, which took place on May 12.

The 17-year-old VG from Alkmaar, who stabbed the 15-year-old Hoogkar player in his head, has been sentenced to 425 days of juvenile detention, 231 of which are conditional. The court finds it proven that there was attempted murder.

The 18-year-old co-defendant – D. de R. from Venhuizen – has been sentenced to 70 days in juvenile detention, 27 of which are conditional. The penalty is less, because his share is smaller and he is not responsible for the head injury suffered by the victim. So he doesn’t have to go back to jail.

The victim is entitled to compensation of 5,000 euros, the court in North Holland ruled on Wednesday afternoon.

‘Tensive atmosphere’

On September 25 last year, things went badly wrong at the fair in Hoogkarspel. There was a ‘tense atmosphere’, D. de R. reflected on that evening. His brother is said to have been beaten, after which someone from his group of friends shouted: ‘That’s ’em’

D. de R. and VG immediately went after it. The victim was pulled from his bicycle. He still shouted:you got the wrong one’but by then it was already too late. The Hoogkar player was beaten and stabbed in the head.

Disorder

Experts have identified a “personality disorder” at VG. For that reason, he is imposed an extensive treatment plan, such as a notification obligation to the juvenile probation service. The judge also ordered him to have no contact with the victim. To be able to check this, he is given an electronic ankle bracelet.

R. also has to report regularly to the probation service and, like VG, has a contact ban.
