Four dead in several avalanches in northern Italy | Abroad

A total of four ski tourers were killed in several avalanches in northern Italy this weekend. This has been announced by the Italian mountain rescue service.

In South Tyrol, two local residents were killed after a sheet of snow broke loose in the Vinschgaudal on Sunday morning, dragging several people with it. For a man and a woman, all help came too late, another man was flown to hospital with serious injuries by helicopter.

In the Aosta valley, on the Swiss border and known for the Matterhorn, an avalanche killed two people on Saturday evening.

According to the mountain rescue service, four avalanches occurred in a few hours; two in the Aosta Valley, one in South Tyrol and one in the Piedmont region. Seventeen winter sports enthusiasts were affected. In the second accident in the Aosta Valley and in Piemonte, the victims were rescued by their attendants. Authorities had warned of dangerous snow conditions before the weekend.
