Jordi de Wijs (29) only has one game over the full season and three short appearances in the current season at Fortuna Düsseldorf. A loan should help. The central defender will spend the rest of the season with SC Heerenveen in the Dutch first division, Fortuna announced on Thursday. In the Eredivisie eleventh team he is supposed to compensate for the injury of Pawel Bochniewicz (28).
“Due to the current situation in the central defender position, all parties agreed that we would strive for a solution in the winter,” explained Fortuna sports director Christian Weber. “We are firmly convinced that Heerenveen is the right option and that Jordy will play there regularly and find his rhythm.” According to managing director Ferry de Haan, Heerenveen was looking for a left-footed central defender, like regular player Bochniewicz is. The Pole tore a ligament in his knee in November.
The Düsseldorf team signed de Wijs permanently after a six-month loan in the summer of 2022 and paid almost one million euros to Queens Park Rangers for the Dutchman. The 2023/24 season, in which promotion to the Bundesliga almost succeeded, was the most successful. With the exception of an injury interruption, de Wijs was generally used, even scoring two goals and providing three assists in 28 games during the season.
De Wijs is joining the SC Heerenveen team, which has been coached by former Dutch striker icon Robin van Persie since this season, in the training camp in Spain. At the start of the second half of the season, the Superfriezen will play at NAC Breda on January 12th, with Ajax expected a week later. In the table, Heerenveen is nine points ahead of the relegation places and is one point behind the places for the playoffs, in which the four teams in sixth to ninth place play for a place in the Conference League in the semi-finals and final.
