Formula 1 refreshed the memories of Sebastian Vettel’s record in the 2013 season in good time.
“A decade later we could see history repeating itself,” wrote the motorsport premier class on Instagram. Because this Sunday (3:00 p.m. / Sky) Max Verstappen in the Red Bull could stop Vettel’s series in the Red Bull. The native of Heppenheim, who retired from Formula 1 at the end of last year, had won nine times in a row.
The longest series up to that point had been seven wins. In one year – 2004 – Michael Schumacher made it in the Ferrari. Alberto Ascari did it across seasons in 1952 and 1953, Nico Rosberg in 2015 and 2016.
After his eighth triumph, Vettel emphasized: “It’s one of those records that you assume will never be broken. It’s hard to find the right words.”
In Zandvoort, Verstappen can now achieve the ninth win in a row. The 25-year-old Dutchman has won ten of the twelve races of the season so far, and his team-mate Sergio Pérez has won two. Verstappen’s winning streak started in Miami and went through Monaco, Spain, Canada, Austria, Great Britain, Hungary and Belgium.
