After a frustrating and early end to the race in Canada, George Russell is overcome with emotion. Now the Mercedes driver apologizes.
It was a frustrating weekend for George Russell: After being beaten by his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli in three races in a row, the Brit actually wanted to strike back in the championship fight at the race in Canada.
The project started promisingly: Russell secured pole position in qualifying on Saturday, and in the race he then had a thrilling wheel-to-wheel duel with several overtaking maneuvers against Antonelli. But the fight for victory came to an abrupt end when a technical problem on Russell’s car ended his race prematurely. Antonelli won and is already 43 points ahead of Russell in the World Championship standings.

Russell was immediately aware of the significance of the failure, and his anger was correspondingly great. In a rage, Russell threw the buckle of his seatbelt and the headrest from his cockpit onto the track. The tantrum was met with little enthusiasm by the supervisory authority of the international automobile association Fia: Russell had to pay a fine of 5,000 euros.
One day after the race, the 28-year-old also made a public statement. He reposted a post on Platform Russell is also likely to show public remorse because, as one of the directors of the drivers’ union GPDA, he should actually be setting a good example.
Russell’s next chance to make up ground on Antonelli in the World Championship battle will be on the first weekend in June at the legendary race in the Principality of Monaco.
