16

The view of the classification

The safety car is still on the track. Verstappen leads ahead of Hamilton and Alonso. Charles Leclerc follows behind in front of Sainz and Pérez. All three pilots were not at a pit stop. Magnussen and Bottas didn’t stop either.

13.

20:21

Max Verstappen pit stop

Max Verstappen

Red Bull Racing

There is a lot going on in the pit lane and many come to their stop. Verstappen is the first driver to turn, followed shortly by Hamilton and Alonso. Aston Martin made a much quicker stop, but Hamilton squeezed himself in between them when exiting, so Alonso had to brake. The stewards will certainly look at that.

12.

20:20

safety car

And shortly afterwards the safety car. A situation that many drivers will no doubt use for a pit stop.

6.

20:09

1.

20:04

Start race

The lights are off, the race in Canada has started! Max Verstappen has no problems at the start. The Dutchman makes a good start while behind them Hamilton grabs Alonso’s Aston Martin. Russell remains fourth ahead of Ocon, who squeezes past Hulkenberg.

20:02

It’s about to start

The cars return to the starting grid. Now it won’t be long until the race starts!

20:00

Formation lap in progress

The formation lap is underway and Max Verstappen leads the field one last time before the start. Most of the field starts on the medium. On Hard are Pérez, Magnussen and Bottas. Gasly starts behind on soft.

19:54

The distance

The Canada race will be driven on the 4.361 kilometer “Circuit Gilles Villeneuve”. The course is located on the island of Notre Dame, in the middle of the imposing St. Lawrence River and challenges the drivers with numerous full-throttle sections. 14 curves await the drivers. The course is famous for the ‘wall of champions’ in the last corner before the finish.

19:51

The weather

After heavy rain yesterday in Montreal, the riders will face sunshine and warm temperatures today. The track temperature is currently 29 degrees, the air temperature 18 degrees.

19:46

Albon out of the top ten

Alex Albon had a good day on Saturday. The Williams driver showed courage in Q2, went straight onto the slick on a drying track and was able to qualify for Q3 with first place in the qualifying segment. However, Albon didn’t get the best timing there, couldn’t set a time before the Piastri accident and had no chance when the rain got heavier. However, with ninth place, it is still a good starting position.

19:42

Working on the Leclerc car

Leclerc was still working on the car on the grid. The Monegasse had damaged its underbody on the formation lap. In the meantime, however, things have calmed down again for the mechanics.

19:35

Ferrari back too

The same fate befell Charles Leclerc, who later fretted that Ferrari had not listened to his feedback early in Q2 to switch to slicks earlier. A grid penalty from team-mate Sainz saw Leclerc move up a position, but even from tenth place, the starting position for the race is certainly not ideal. Sainz is behind them in eleventh place.

19:28

Pérez only in twelfth place

While Verstappen has a good starting position for the race from first place, things look very different for his teammate and currently the toughest competitor for the World Championship. The Mexican missed Q3 for the third time in a row and has to work his way through the field. In the end, only twelfth place was possible for Sergio Pérez in qualifying.

19:18

Verstappen from pole, Hulkenberg loses P2

On Saturday, the fans experienced a spectacular qualifying session in wet conditions. That did little to change the current dominance of Max Verstappen. The Dutchman was on the right strategy in Q3, was the first driver out and was able to set a top time before a red flag was issued after a crash by Piastri. A sensational Hülkenberg would have stood next to him, but the German received a penalty for a red offense a few hours after qualifying. But the German should also be satisfied with fifth place. Fernando Alonso inherits second place in the Aston Martin. The two Mercedes drivers are in wait. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will start the race from the second row.
