The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Barcelona is coming up this weekend. One of the most sought-after drivers among fans will once again be Fernando Alonso. Possibly for the last time, if you believe the old master’s recent statements.
“It will be a special weekend, probably my last race in Barcelona in Formula 1,” said Alonso at the press conference before the race weekend.
However, the local hero isn’t expecting much from this: “I won’t be competitive and won’t get far in Q1, but hopefully everyone can enjoy the weekend,” said Alonso.
If it is actually the Spaniard’s last appearance in Barcelona, it would mean that his career would come to an end in 2027 at the latest. Formula 1 will not return to Barcelona until 2028. In the future, the race will alternate with the Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps.
In order to still be in the car in 2027, Alonso would first have to extend his contract, which expires after this season. After the summer, I’ll decide whether I want to continue or not,” Alonso announced. He doesn’t have any “concrete plans” yet.
Alonso will turn 45 at the end of July
Alonso will be 45 years old at the end of July. However, the old master is currently only following behind in the inferior Aston Martin. For a two-time world champion, this is difficult to digest: “The hardest thing for me is not winning any races and not being competitive,” said the Spaniard, who then appeared to be forgiving.
“Whether this is the last time or not doesn’t matter too much – I’m at peace with my career. I’ve achieved much more than I ever dreamed of as a child,” Alonso said
“I think it’s my 23rd time here and every time it’s been magical. I hope it’ll be the same this time,” said Alonso, who last won a Formula 1 race in 2013.
